The Halloween fun started early for our Tuesday/Thursday students - they had a blast trick-or-treating in the hallways today! AND it was so great seeing so many staff members dressed up for the fun! More candy and photos tomorrow - Happy Halloween, have a wonderful time and stay safe!

WP Sixth Graders traveled back in time to learn about living in a medieval village. These students read "Good Masters! Sweet Ladies! Voices from a Medieval Village" by Laura Amy Schlitz. After choosing a character from the story, each student memorized and performed a monologue or dialogue for Student Showcase. These performances included costumes, sets, props, and backdrops created by the sixth graders.
Experiential & Hands-On Learning brings learning to life and creates Confident Students.
We are hosting an Admissions Open House on Tuesday, November 4th, 5:30PM to 7:30PM. Parents and students can explore the classrooms and campus, meet members of our school community, and discover more!

These PreK 4s students read the book by Joe Troiano, "Spookley the Square Pumpkin" and talked about how we are all different shapes and sizes! This type of lesson promotes kindness, acceptance, and that everyone has value. At the end of book, Spookley's square shape helps all the pumpkins stay safe during a storm!
The students created their own Spookley - Art projects like this help to develop fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and dexterity.
During Studio Art class, our Primer Students have been learning all about Yayoi Kusama this month! Yayoi Kusama is the queen of polka dots and pumpkins. Primer has been studying this fabulous artist as a way to introduce them to 3D art and sculpture. They have been reading stories about the artist as well as looking at her art installations and paintings. They have put all of this knowledge into creating their own Kusama inspired 3D sculptures. These sculptures are made with a tin foil frame, wrapped in paper towels that have been dipped in liquid starch. Once dry, the students painted their masterpieces to replicate Kusama's famous yellow and black pumpkins.
Hands-on activities like sculpting and 3D modeling help to develop fine motor skills, creativity, spatial awareness, problem solving abilities, and it's MESSY FUN!
Ms. Krause's Second Graders worked in pairs to prepare for a SPOOKY Readers Theater performance for last week's Student Showcase . The selections were called "poems for two voices" from the book, "You Read to Me, I'll Read to You: Scary Tales to Read Together" - these performances helped the students build reading fluency and oral communication skills in a fun way!
These types of lessons/performances foster creativity and confidence. Students develop important abilities like thinking on their feet, teamwork, and public speaking. They also help students connect with the lesson in new ways.
Wesley Prep Second Graders learned about the amazing Frida Kahlo in Spanish class last week - they listened and read along to her story and then colored a portrait of her. Learning about historical figures in Spanish enhances language and cultural comprehension - offering inspiration and building appreciation for Hispanic culture and the contributions to the world. It is importance for our students to understand the history and values that shape the Spanish-speaking world.
Wesley Prep Second Graders have been working on a Halloween-themed writing unit. They are learning how to edit their writing, use commas in a series, use transition words to write in sequential order, and use adjectives in their writing to make it more descriptive. After Mrs. Roberts read "Bats" by Gail Gibbons, the students wrote about all the fun and interesting facts they learned. They brainstormed and took notes as a class and then wrote and edited a paragraph. Lastly, they drew a picture and then created their own bat to hang in the hallway.
Our Kindergarteners are learning about Texas and our state symbols. The students created Texas Flags by ripping paper into small pieces to create a mosaic. Ripping paper is a fantastic fine motor activity. It strengthens hand muscles, improves bilateral coordination and supports scissor and writing skills.
Also, learning about "The Lone Star State" builds a sense of community and having an understanding of the history of Texas can also foster a sense of local pride! Everything is bigger and better in Texas!
Howdy Folks - today was the first day of Western Fair Day! This is a Wesley Prep "treasured tradition" for our PreK 3s classes. Joyful Learning equals Confident Children! More photos coming soon...
First graders have started writing their very own fictional stories! They have learned that all stories need important elements: characters, a setting, a problem, and a solution. After brainstorming together, students began drafting their stories with a clear beginning, middle, and end. These students are working so hard and are very excited to share their creations at our upcoming Student Showcase in just a couple of weeks!
Learning to write stories fosters creativity and imagination and develops organizational skills and critical thinking!
Wesley Prep 6th Graders participated in a STEM challenge today focused on Bird Migration. These students started the lesson by learning about key reasons for migration (temperature, food, resources, reproduction, survival, and more). They participated in class and small group discussions. The students ended the lesson with a challenge to create a "bird" out of paper and tape. Also, their bird had to be able to carry 4 paper clips (to simulate food weight). All of the "birds" were different shapes and sizes. Some of their creations were able to fly longer distances than others.
"Jack be Nimble" and "Little Miss Muffet" were brought to life in Mrs. Rogers' Preschool Classroom. The children painted and jumped over candlesticks and sat on a "tuffet" just like Miss Muffet only to be frightened away by a pesky spider!
While nursery rhymes may seem nonsensical and silly, the patterns within them help young children learn easy recall and memorization which are essential early literacy skills.
You never know who is going to show up at Wesley Prep for "Secret Reader" - our Second Graders in Mrs. Roberts' class welcomed Iron Man and Pepper Potts to their classroom today. We have the best parent community - So fun!
These PreK 2.5s students have been learning all about Nursery Rhymes. They had so much singing "Mary Had a Little Lamb" - they read the book, sang with a lamb puppet, and even made a craft by gluing cotton balls onto a lamb.
Nursery Rhymes are important for children - they emphasize sounds and syllables, and their repetitive nature provides a great foundation for language and vocabulary growth. AND these students worked hard on their art project - increasing fine motor skills.
Last week, our 5th and 6th graders graders took a pause in their normal curriculum to learn about "Fat Bear Week" - they learned how different bears prepare in the different seasons leading up to hibernation. These students researched, read, and designed posters highlighting what these "fat bears" eat and do in each of the four seasons. In addition, the students are voting in each round for their favorite bears and having lively discussion as to WHY they are voting for certain bears.
We learned a lot about the unique hierarchy and family structure of the grizzlies on the Brooks River in Katmai National Park.
The Spooktacular Decorations at Entrance D are absolutely amazing! What a wonderful surprise for our students! Thank you to our parents, students, and staff members for all your hard work and time over the weekend. This year's carnival is going to be Spooktacularly Sweet! You don't want to miss this event: Saturday, October 18th. There are lots of ways to underwrite and support the carnival.
Wristband sales will be open soon.

After reading the book, "Goodbye Summer, Hello Autumn" by Kenard Pak, these Kindergarteners drew a picture and wrote a sentence to describe what they are excited for in Autumn. Each student created something different to collaborate on a class the book: "Hello Autumn!"
The students are excited to read their class book together! This type of group project fosters creativity, improves communication skills, and builds confidence!
These students participated in some Fossil Fun in Mrs. Lane's PreK 3 class! As part of their dinosaur unit, the students used salt dough and dinosaur toys to create prehistoric prints. We love learning through play, creativity, and a little bit of mess!
This type of STEM activity sparks curiosity about the past, develops fine motor skills, and prompts children to ask questions like: "Where did dinosaurs live?"
